BRIDGEThe Bridge. copyright Ivan Gardner

The bridge is the main life line for the islanders, without it life could become intolerable in the winter.

The bridge was constructed in 1939, it is built of steel which has advantages and disadvantages over iron. It is stronger but needs more protection.

The bridge is a suspension type, with wooden steps over an iron frame leading up to them.

On the land side of the bridge there is no longer a toll gate. Residents have a key to open the gate, casual visitors and tradesmen have to pay 10p by placing their money in the opening mechanism.  Replaced in 2004 by a boring combination lock, but old mdf still has the old lock to put back to raise a little money if needed. A newer magnetic combination lock is due to be fitted in spring 08.

The bridge is surveyed every 6 years.

Detailed survey reports are available.

Last survey was in 2002. Next one due 2008.

REPAIRS

The bridge is our vital link with civilisation! and it is also the most expensive and the largest piece of equipment on the Island.

In 1999/2000 the bridge was painted .

In September 2003 the steps leading up the bridge were rebuilt and the iron work beneath them was replaced , this work went on over two weeks while the bridge was shut, (a ferry was provided for Islanders). This work has been most successful the iron work should last another 60 years, the steps hopefully 20 years.

In the summer of 2004 the wooden floor of the main span was replaced and  a defective piece of iron work underneath it was repaired.

The iron work on the main span being considered to be in much better condition than the ironwork on the steps.

This picture shows Kenny who was responsible for the iron work on the bridge. In September 2006 while walking over the bridge he had a massive heart attack and died shortly after.

Because the bridge is so important and also one of the most beautiful aspects of the Island it is constantly being monitored, any repairs are executed ASAP. It is hoped in the near future that we will be able to illuminate the bridge.
